Science
INTENT
At St Germans School, our intent in science is to provide a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum; ensuring the progressive development of knowledge, skills and vocabulary and for the children to develop a deep and lasting love of science.
We hope to inspire our children by giving them the opportunities to pursue their natural curiosity; promoting the experience of exploring and investigating scientific phenomena, in a range of contexts, to ensure a continually evolving knowledge and understanding of the world around them.
Our children will be encouraged to ask questions, experiment, reflect, make and learn from mistakes, in a safe environment. Through this we aim to prepare our pupils for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world.
IMPLEMENTATION
- Science is coherently planned and sequenced to progressively build children’s understanding of scientific concepts.
- All science is taught as a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum.
- Where possible, science lessons are linked to the topic being taught.
- Investigations are carried out at least once per half term.
- Children explore, test, predict, develop their scientific vocabulary and develop ideas in their science lessons
- Never heard the word grid is used at the beginning and the end of the unit to assess understanding and measure progress
- Quizzes and a short end of unit test linked to the KIRFs are used to measure progress and identify next steps
- KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) are used to support retrieval and develop long term memory of key facts
- Science homework is given every half term as part of our homework grid
Primary Science Quality Mark
This year, we are working towards gaining the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM). This demonstrates our commitment in embedding Science across our curriculum.
SCIENCE WEEK:
Actively learning how to: work as a team, explore ideas, investigate, ask questions, enquire and problem solve. The activities included: pond dipping, finger printing, circuits, building bridges and forest school science. The children have had lots of fun!
